Healing Power of Hado or Self Help Way to Treat Colitis and Other IBS Conditions Second Edition

Healing Power of Hado

Author: Toyoko Matsuzaki

In The Healing Power of Hado, Toyoko Matsuzaki shares stories of her experiences as a hado master and demystifies this form of energy and healing for readers. She defines hado as it relates to one's everyday life, shares her own story of how she became a hado master, and explains how readers can access this unique source of power. By tapping into their hado power, beginners can sense the hado of other people, objects, and environments. At a more advanced level, practitioners of this art can change physical aspects of their lives (for example, turn aggression into gentleness and change the taste of water). Those who practice hado at the master level can heal physical ailments of their own and others (hands-on or remotely), discover their clairvoyant abilities, and even receive messages from departed loved ones. In a world filled with violence and conflict, hado is an especially important and welcome force. Hado lessons and guidelines for forming a support group for continued practice are included.

The Eye Book or The Chelation Way

The Eye Book: A Complete Guide to Eye Disorders and Health

Author: Gary H Cassel

When all is well with our eyes, most of us take them for granted. But when our vision is blurred or our eyes are itchy and watery, it's hard to concentrate on anything but our eyes. In The Eye Book, three eye care specialists present a comprehensive reference to help readers care for their eyes and protect their vision, with special attention to changes and diseases that occur in the adult years.

After detailing how the various parts of the eye work together so we can see, the authors review everything that can go wrong -- from myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism to the major disorders of cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. They also thoroughly describe each part of the eye and the problems that can develop, from the irritation of itchy eyelids and conjunctivitis to emergency situations such as a detached retina. They describe the signs and symptoms of all these problems and how to deal with them, including when to apply a warm compress -- and when to head to the emergency room. Medical and surgical treatment of both minor eye irritations and major diseases are explained in detail, so readers know where to turn and what to expect.

The authors also tell readers what happens during an eye examination and how to recognize an eye emergency. They explain all about eyeglasses, including the various kinds of bifocals, and describe the care and maintenance of contact lenses in a way that makes wearing them a viable option for anyone who wishes to do so. They detail the special concerns of people with systemic diseases such as diabetes and indicate how common medications -- from antibiotics and antidepressants to tamoxifen -- affect the eyes. The pros andcons of refractive surgery are discussed, as are the special problems of people with low vision.

An appendix lists medications used to treat eye conditions and the side effects of those medications. The book is fully illustrated with fifty-five line drawings and includes a symptoms index that will direct readers to sections of the book which describe the possible causes of the specific symptoms they are experiencing.

Library Journal

Fear of reduced vision and blindness regularly tops surveys of consumers' concerns about their health. Therefore, comprehensive, current information on this small but vital area of the human body is a high priority for libraries answering consumer health queries. The authors are associated with the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University, consistently rated one of the top ophthalmology departments in the United States. Their guide covers routine eye care and the more common eye diseases, providing up-to-date facts on refractive surgery, treatment for optical neuritis, and possible nutritional therapies for cataracts and macular degeneration. Information on systemic and general health conditions affecting the eye is provided, as is a good introduction to the problem of "low vision," vision that cannot be corrected by spectacles, contact lenses, or introcular lens implants. The coverage of the newest refractive surgical techniques, clinical trials, and medications makes this an important acquisition for libraries with similar titles; highly recommended for public, school, and hospital libraries.--Pamela C. Sieving, W.K. Kellogg Eye Ctr., Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor

Booknews

Coverage extends to health problems and medications that effect the eyes. The volume does not include bibliographical references. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

The Chelation Way: The Complete Book of Chelation Therapy

Author: Morton Walker

Chelation (pronounced key-lay-shun) therapy is a safe, effective non-surgical treatment that has successfully been used to prevent and treat hardening of the arteries for over forty years in the United States. New evidence indicates that it may also help to control and, in some cases, reverse the effects of arthritis, cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, glaucoma, metal toxicity, irregular heart beat, senility, and gangrene, as well as a host of other degenerative illnesses. As more studies show the many benefits of chelation therapy, the number of physicians utilizing it continues to grow. In this important new book, Dr. Morton Walker explains how chelation works, documents the evidence of its effects, and discusses its oral and intravenous use. Since intravenous treatment is not always necessary, Dr. Walker also tells the reader about over-the-counter oral chelating agents -- what they are, where to find them, and what dosage to take.

Library Journal

Walker's book provides a complete explanation of chelation therapy. The only use for this therapy which is generally accepted is to remove lead from the bloodstream in cases of lead toxicity, although new evidence suggests it may help to control and in some cases reverse the effects of arthritis, cancer, stroke, and more. Using lay language, Walker explains the various chelating agents and how they work, and presents case studies of patients who have been helped by the therapy. An appendix lists chelating physicians worldwide. This is an interesting treatment of the subject, much more comprehensive than any other book. Recommended for public libraries only where books on alternative medical therapies are popular.--Barbara Kormelink, Bay Medical Ctr . Lib., Bay City, Mich.

With the help of pediatrician Hill (Univ. of Colorado) and nutritionist Crockett (VP, senior technology office, health & nutrition, General Mills), General Mills has produced another "healthful" cookbook. Approximately one quarter is devoted to weight-loss suggestions, menus, information on obesity, and weight loss authority Hill's Step Diet Book. The 140 recipes cover a variety of foods-breakfasts, snacks, slow cooking, dinners in 30 minutes, lunches for kids, and even desserts. Nutrition information, preparation time, and a sidebar from the doctor or nutritionist accompany each recipe. Not surprisingly, General Mills products and other packaged foods are used as ingredients, with Bisquick appearing often. Novice cooks, including children, will enjoy the simple directions and full-page color photographs. However, without some cooking knowledge, excessive oven heat and oven time may produce a burnt Halibut Potato Succotash Dinner. It is also doubtful that a Chicken Salad with Blue Cheese will be a favorite for children's lunches. Yet with the popularity of the ageless Betty Crocker, this cookbook will be in demand in public libraries.-Christine Bulson, SUNY at Oneonta Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Drug Therapy and Mood Disorders or Baby Massage for Dummies

Drug Therapy and Mood Disorders

Author: Joan Esherick

Everyone experiences the "blues" now and then as well as times of joy and self-confidence. Most people even experience mood swings-times when they move quickly from feelings like joy to opposite feelings like sorrow. But what happens when normal moods become so extreme that a person can't think, feel, or act appropriately? What if a person is so "up" he does foolish, even dangerous, things? What if he's so "down" he can barely get out of bed?

The U.S. Surgeon General reports that, at any one time, between 10 and 15 percent of the adolescent population in the United States suffers from major depression. That's one in ten teens! According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 20 to 40 percent of those will develop bipolar disorder (manic depression) within five years.

Often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, mood disorders present major challenges, such as increased risk for illness, higher probability of social and interpersonal problems, and greater likelihood of substance abuse for those who suffer with them. Mood disorders, when left untreated, can even be fatal: seven percent of adolescents with major depressive disorder commit suicide.

What are mood disorders, and how can they be treated? Using numerous case studies and sidebars, and written in language that is easy to understand, Drug Therapy and Mood Disorders takes a comprehensive look at the causes and symptoms of mood disorders. In its pages, you will learn about the methods for diagnosis and treatment, specific drugs used to treat mood disorders, and alternative treatment strategies. Along the way, you will discover that mood disorders, though serious and challenging, are treatable, and help can be found.

Cathi I. White - Children's Literature

Everyone experiences certain "ups" and "downs" in life, but what if those times become more frequent until one can hardly function or act appropriately? What if the changes from joy to sorrow happen more often and to the extreme so that those moods affect how one acts toward others? It could be possible that a person in these situations may be suffering from a mood disorder. A mood disorder is a "condition rooted in the brain that causes disturbances in a way that a person thinks, feels, or acts, but especially affects the person's moods." This detailed, well-written and very comprehensive book explores the aspects of mood disorders in adolescents. The reader will learn about the history of mood disorders, how they are treated, the drugs available and how they can help, and also the possible risks and side effects from taking these drugs. Real case studies are given as examples to let the reader know that they are not the only one who may be going through what they are experiencing. Adolescents will know that there is help they can get from various sources such as those listed in the back of the book. This enlightening book is also jam packed with photographs, charts, and glossaries. This educational book, part of the "Psychiatric Disorders: Drugs and Psychology for the Mind and Body" series helps the reader to be well informed, in simple language, about mood disorders. 2004, Mason Crest Publishers, Ages 12 up.

Sexual Violence on Campus or The Writing Diet

Sexual Violence on Campus: Policies, Programs and Perspectives, Vol. 4

Author: Allen J Ottens

This is a somber reminder that sexual aggression, violence, and rape are chronic and serious problems on college campuses today. The volume proposes proactive strides toward stopping such violence. It addresses the role of alcohol and rape, includes the latest information on club drugs and drug-facilitated rape, and explores the special issues surrounding gay, lesbian and transgender violence. Chapters also address changing "the culture" found in, and often fostered by, fraternities and sororities as well as some athletic teams. It puts forward constructive strategies for preventing sexual assault, managing anger, group counseling for survivors, and more. This book will aid counselors and administrators in understanding and stopping sexual assault on college campuses across the country.

Booknews

Date rape and sexual violence are finally being taken seriously on US college campuses, as attested to by these dozen papers. Ottens begins with an overview of the scope of the problem while pointing out that only some students exploit opportunities for such relationship transgressions. Most of the contributors focus on education, counseling, and risk reduction programs for "changing a culture." Others address the use of drugs to facilitate rape, and the sexual assault of gay/lesbian/bisexual students. Ottens and Hotelling are clinical psychologists at Northern Illinois U. Annotation c. The Writing Diet: Write Yourself Right-Size

Author: Julia Cameron

From the bestselling author of The Artist's Way, a revolutionary diet plan: Use art to take off the pounds!

Over the course of the past twenty-five years, Julia Cameron has taught thousands of artists and aspiring artists how to unblock wellsprings of creativity. And time and again she has noticed an interesting thing: Often, in uncovering their creative selves her students also undergo a surprising physical transformation-invigorated by their work, they slim down. In The Writing Diet, Cameron illuminates the relationship between creativity and eating to reveal a crucial equation: creativity can block overeating.

This inspiring weight-loss program, which can be used in conjunction with Cameron's groundbreaking book on the creative process, The Artist's Way, directs readers to count words instead of calories, to substitute their writing's "food for thought" for actual food. Using journaling to examine their relationship with food-and to ward off unhealthy overeating -readers will learn to treat food cravings as invitations to evaluate what they are truly craving in their emotional lives.

The Writing Diet presents a brilliant plan for using one of the soul's deepest and most abiding appetites-the desire to be creative-to lose weight and keep it off forever.

I'm a creativity expert, not a diet expert. So why am I writing a book about weight loss? Because I have accidentally stumbled upon a weight-loss secret that works. For twenty-five years I've taught creative unblocking, a twelve-week process based on my book The Artist's Way. From the front of the classroom I've seen lives transformed-and, to my astonishment, bodies transformed aswell. It took me a while to recognize what was going on, but sure enough, students who began the course on the plump side ended up visibly leaner and more fit. What's going on here? I asked myself. Was it my imagination, or was there truly a "before" and an "after"? There was!

The Person with Alzheimers Disease or New Cancer Survivors

The Person with Alzheimer's Disease

Author: Phyllis Braudy Harris

Few families are untouched by Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. Moving accounts of what it is like to care for someone with this disease have already been published, as well as how-to books that offer caregivers advice and information on coping. But this book is the first to provide a comprehensive report of what it is like to have dementia oneself-the subjective experience of living with progressive memory loss.

Each chapter discusses a different aspect of having dementia, from the initial assessment and diagnosis through placement in a nursing home. The discussions are grounded in qualitative research and case studies, which convey the variable and personal nature of the experience. They seek to help clinicians, researchers, students, and caregivers (both professionals and family members) understand the experience of dementia, and thereby to promote better caregiving through a person-centered approach.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Marquis D. Foreman, PhD, RN, FAAN (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing)
Description: This book presents various perspectives on the personal experience of living with progressive memory loss:specifically that due to Alzheimer's disease.
Purpose: The purposes are to describe what it is like to live day-to-day with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, and to identify what lessons can be learned from these accounts to improve the quality of care for these individuals and their families.
Audience: The editor indicates that the audience includes scholars and practitioners truly committed to person-centered dementia care and research.
Features: This book consists of 14 chapters in three parts: The Medical Experience; The Impact of the Diagnosis on Everyday Life; and Experiences with Formal Services. These chapters are written by both the providers of care as well as by people at various stages of Alzheimer's disease.
Assessment: This is an amazing book! The personal accounts of those either living with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or intimately providing care to such individuals are overwhelming. I was greatly moved by the very personal and intimate accounts of the difficulties and challenges presented by progressive memory loss. More important is the effort to take these experiences and learn from them. This book is critical for people newly diagnosed and their family and friends, and all of us who provide care to these families.

Booknews

In order to provide insight into the daily lives of Alzheimer's patients, Harris (aging studies and sociology, John Carroll U.) presents an overview of the subjective experience of living with progressive memory loss. Relying primarily on interviews and surveys with patients, 14 chapters look at Alzheimer's patients' experience with medical institutions, daily living, and formal services. The focus throughout is on the maintenance of selfhood and quality of life. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

What People Are Saying

Nancy L. Mace
This book is essential reading for everyone providing care. It moves beyond negative stereotypes to explore the richness and complexity of personhood with dementia. (Nancy L. Mace, co-author of The 36-Hour Day)

Murna Downs
Drawing on contributions from researchers and clinicians who have gathered information from a wide variety of sources, this book presents the day-to-day experience of living with dementia in the words of the people themselves. The book's originality lies in the evidence it brings to bear on the active and able manner in which people with dementia live with the condition. There are no comparable books published in this area. This will be a key text in dementia studies. (Murna Downs, University of Bradford)

New Cancer Survivors: Living with Grace, Fighting with Spirit

Author: Natalie Davis Spingarn

Surviving with cancer, Natalie Davis Spingarn tells us, means seeing yourself differently and recognizing that others may see you differently. It means worrying more about work and money. It means facing your mortality. It means dealing with the medical system by learning how to be a good consumer of health services -- including making choices among different doctors, medical centers, and insurance plans.

Diagnosed with cancer in the early 1970s and now an independent writer specializing in health and social policy issues (particularly for the Washington Post), Spingarn uses her experiences as the basis for describing and critiquing what experts say about the emotional, physical, family, and practical issues involved. She helps others deal with such issues by relating her own experiences, good and bad, and offering practical encouragement to readers in similar situations.

Lively and empathetic, The New Cancer Survivors will appeal to persons with cancer who, thanks to modern medical science, are "hanging in there with illnesses that once evoked only submission or surrender" -- as well as to their families, friends, and caregivers. Throughout, the author shines a bright light on the cancer experience, providing good reason to be hopeful as well as insight into how to respond when things do not go so well. Because she has suffered recurrences, she can compare treatment in the seventies (week-long hospital stays, for example, and extensive surgery and chemotherapy) with treatment in the nineties ("drive-through" precision surgery, genetic testing, the incorporation of some "complementary" therapies into mainstream medicine) and weigh the differences. The New CancerSurvivors digs deep for the truth and serves it up with humor and attitude -- offering a wealth of information, comfort, and inspiration.

Praise for Natalie Davis Spingarn:

"Spingarn... gives encouragement to others in similar situations, drawing on and citing the wealth of literature dealing with various aspects of cancer to supplement her own observations." -- Library Journal

"Deals with many topics traditionally considered taboo in talking to those with life-threatening illness, including problems with money, work, friends, relatives, and erratic health insurance coverage." -- Boston Globe

"The most important ingredient of the Spingarn recipe for 'hanging in': A generous dash of hope seasoned with the self-discipline of making choices and a willingness to take risks." -- New York Daily News

"A Baedeker for cancer patients and their families." -- Washington Post

"Natalie Davis Spingarn's great talent is finding the most common denominator that is not the lowest common denominator. She offers herself to her fellow cancer survivors as a favorite aunt who will 'talk about it' when no one else will. Every cancer survivor, no matter how well informed already, will find information and affirmation in this book. Medical professionals who want to learn what their work looks like from the patient's perspective will find a mirror view in which they can improve their practices." -- Arthur W. Frank, University of Calgary, author of At the Will of Body: Reflections on Illness and The Wounded Storyteller: Body, Illness, and Ethics

Lisa A. Desjardins

This is the compilation of the experiences of the author and other survivors who have experienced the many life issues of living with cancer. Through a collection of personal experiences of cancer survivors, the author purports to address realistically the paramount issues for those who are living with a serious illness and those who are taking care of people with a serious illness. She discusses issues that the cancer survivor and their caregivers experience on a daily basis and how they have overcome their obstacles. She also offers insight to what the future may hold, and to help ease stress for those who are already going through their experience. The goal is worthy. The author offers education and hope, and assists the reader in finding peace and acceptance in what could be a tumultuous experience. This book is geared towards cancer survivors and their caregivers, but would be welcomed by all. The medical community, politicians, or anyone who wants to understand the experience of a human being living with cancer would benefit greatly from this work. A variety of issues faced by the cancer survivor are discussed -- family, personal, spiritual, and medical. The book is easily delivered and appealing to the audience as these issues are discussed from the author's personal experience, seasoned with medical research. Concluding the book is the appendix, in which the Cancer Survivors Bill of Rights is discussed and a detailed reference list is provided. This is a work that has significant value for all involved with the cancer survivor. The author offers hope, encouragement, wisdom, and insight during a time when people with cancer and their families need it most. I would offerthis book to my own patients and their families as a source of comfort, as they go through their cancer journey.

Radiant Health: The Ancient Wisdom of the Chinese Tonic Herbs

    Author: Ron Teeguarden

Sure to appeal to the millions who embraced the tenets of Asian medicine in Deepak Chopra's "Ageless Body, Timeless Mind", this book offers road map to total health through the use Chinese tonic herbs.

    Library Journal

Teeguarden is a master herbalist and researcher of Chinese tonic herbs--"tonic" meaning herbs prescribed to promote "radiant" health as opposed to attacking disease. His publisher's legal department hedges its bets by stating in the review galley that "absolutely no medicinal claims are being made or implied in this book." Nevertheless, Teeguarden's text is replete with claims concerning sexual potency, the immune system, and anti-aging treatments, among others, that are entirely undocumented except by statements such as "Many studies now indicate...." To his credit (or the legal department's), Teeguarden provides information about contraindications and toxicity. Unfortunately, these caveats are equally undocumented. Radiant Health might be useful on a staff-only reference shelf, but only as a glossary to herbal terms. Not recommended.--Catherine Arnott Smith, Predoctoral Research Fellow, Ctr. for Biomedical Informatics, Univ. of Pittsburgh

The Betty Ford Center Book of Answers: Help for Those Struggling with Substance Abuse and for the People Who Love Them

    Author: James W West

ARE YOU OR IS SOMEONE YOU LOVE STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTION?

When it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, it's hard to know where to turn for help. The professionals at the Betty Ford Center--one of the world's leading and most trusted sources of treatment for oddiction--hove provided thousands with the strength, support, and expertise that substance abusers need to get well. Now, the former medical director of the Betty Ford Center shares that expertise in this remarkably honest and complete book, which answers vital questions that surround this difficult subject:

    • "My son seems to be following in his alcoholic father's footsteps. How can I help him?"

    • "My wife's the alcoholic, why do I need treatment?"

    • "Can the brain rerover from cocaine abuse?"

    • "Even a double dose of my prescription tranquilizers doesn't seem to help. Am I addicted?"

    • "If I get sober, what are my chances of staying sober?"

    • "l am uncomfortable with the spiritual aspect of AA. Is there on alternative?"

    • "Is it true that people who are forced into treatment get nothing out of it?"

Whether you are ten years sober, a current or potential substance abuser, or you care about someone who is, this volume will help you better understand--and fight--the destructive powers of addiction.

    Library Journal

A physician with the Betty Ford Center since it opened in 1982, West based this volume on his newspaper column, adopting a user-friendly, question-and-answer format that makes this basic overview of addictions appealing as well as informative. He explains that his responses "are direct, perhaps at times even abrupt, because that's the way surgeons talk to patients who have some grave disorder, lest there be doubt what should be done." Chapters include straightforward information on how to identify an alcoholic, intervention, effects of substance abuse on the brain and other parts of the body, treatment, prevention, and relapse. An especially useful chapter covers cross addictions and dual disorders. There is also a list of selected treatment organizations. Chapter headings point to the topics covered, but an index would have improved access. Browsing is easy in this practical little book, which may attract more readers because of its conversational style. Recommended for high school and public libraries.-Catherine T. The Miracle Method or Everything Nutrition

The Miracle Method: A Radically New Approach to Problem Drinking

    Author: Scott D Miller

From that "first thing," the authors help readers to imagine a future where drinking is not a problem and to specify small, concrete, obtainable goals that will make that future a reality. Neither the humiliation of "hitting bottom" nor a lifetime commitment to AA is necessary to make this approach work. Instead the individual learns to recognize exceptions (times when drinking is not a problem), catch himself "doing things right," handle setbacks, and revise the "miracle picture" when things aren't working. Highly practical, The Miracle Method is a radically new and effective approach to problem drinking.

    Library Journal

Miller, who practices solution-oriented therapy in Milwaukee and Chicago, and Berg, director of the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee, offer a new way to lick liquor.

Unstrange Minds or Chicken Soup and Other Folk Remedies

Unstrange Minds: Remapping the World of Autism

    Author: Roy Richard Grinker

This global exploration of autism by a scientist--and father of an autistic child--is the first book to show that the "epidemic" holds surprising new promise for better diagnosis and treatment. Unstrange Minds documents Grinker's quest to find out why autism is so much more common today, and to uncover the implications of the increase. His search took him to Africa, India, and East Asia, to the National Institutes of Mental Health, and to the mountains of Appalachia. What he discovered is both surprising and controversial: There is no true increase in autism.

Grinker shows that the identification and treatment of autism depends on culture just as much as on science. As more and more cases of autism are documented, doctors are describing the disorder better, school systems are coding it better--and children are benefiting.

    People Magazine

Rigorous and compelling. . . Deeper and more provocative than other such memoirs, his work beautifully conveys the fact that Isabel is not her disability; instead she is invested with `an inner truth . . . struggling to blossom.'

    Time Magazine

In Unstrange Minds: Remapping the World of Autism, Grinker uses the lens of anthropology to show how shifting cultural conditions change the way medical scientists do their work and how we perceive mental health

    Nature

A fresh view of the challenges posed by this condition.Grinker's exploration of cultural differences in attitudes to autism is very moving.

    Toronto Globe & Mail

His daughter Isabel was diagnosed in 1994, and his warmth and compassion for autistic children and parents alike shines through this immensely readable and informative narrative that looks closely at how culture influences the ways we understand, classify and treat autistic-spectrum disorders.

    New England Journal of Medicine

Thoughtfully written by a father and scientist trying to understand his daughter and illuminate her disorder.

    Slate

Unstrange Minds makes the case that the rise in autism diagnosis is nothing more than an epidemic of discovery.

    UPI

[A] beautifully written look at autism through the lens of history and culture.

    The Journal of Clinical Investigation

Grinker shows us that it's possible, and perhaps valuable, to deconstruct autism as a means of understanding and addressing it. Given the desperation so evident today, this is a welcome perspective.

    AHA Newsletter

    Scientifically rigorous and profoundly moving.

    PsycCritiques (American Psychological Assoc.)

Fascinating book at many levels. It is very well written and enjoyable to read.

    USA Today

Hands down, Unstrange Minds is the most useful book of the bunch for anyone who is interested in learning more about autism.

    Medscape Pediatrics

    [I]mpassioned and thoughtful.

    Publishers Weekly

Autism is no longer considered a rare, stigmatized disorder; it's one that touches the lives of an increasing number of individuals worldwide. Grinker, director of the George Washington University Institute for Ethnographic Research, is one example of this phenomenon. Driven by the 1994 autism diagnosis his daughter, Isabel, received, Grinker endeavors to collect the myriad scientific, historical and cultural components of autism into an accessible primer. The book is divided into two parts-academic and anecdotal-throughout which the author illustrates his daughter's development and how his family has coped and developed alongside her. The first section recounts the history of autism, from the illness's initial description in 1943, its once taboo status and the erroneously cited causes of autism. Special attention is given to the evolving diagnostic criteria and the increase in prevalence rates. In the emotionally powerful second portion, Grinker details the experiences of parents of autistic children in South Africa, South Korea and India, how their respective societies view the disorder (often negatively) and the obstacles surmounted to increase awareness of autism, its treatment and management. While this grounds the book, the lengths to which Grinker goes to prove to the parents of autistic children they are not alone needn't have been so extensive. (Feb.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    Corey Seeman - Library Journal

Anthropologist Grinker (George Washington Univ. Inst. for Ethnographic Research; In the Arms of Africa) beautifully explores autism from three distinct vantage points. First, he probes its impact on the family through his daughter Isabel (b. 1991). While there are relatively standard passages documenting conflicts with school placement and services, he taps a different side of autism by showing her learning the cello. Next, Grinker examines the broader historical context of autism through the work and lives of key figures Leo Kanner (who first identified autistic children) and Bruno Bettleheim (who worked extensively with them). He also addresses the autism epidemic by pointing out that many people with autism were not seen as autistic before. Third, the text addresses autism in a larger global context, explaining how cultures in Africa, India, and South Korea cope with the condition. These three elements combine to create a book that ranks with Uta Frith's Autism: Explaining the Enigmaas one of the great general books on autism. Highly recommended.

Eve's Herbs: A History of Contraception and Abortion in the West

    Author: John M Riddl

In Contraception and Abortion from the Ancient World to the Renaissance, John Riddle showed, through extraordinary scholarly sleuthing, that women from ancient Egyptian times to the fifteenth century had relied on an extensive pharmacopoeia of herbal abortifacients and contraceptives to regulate fertility. In Eve's Herbs, Riddle explores a new question: If women once had access to effective means of birth control, why was this knowledge lost to them in modern times?

Beginning with the testimony of a young woman brought before the Inquisition in France in 1320, Riddle asks what women knew about regulating fertility with herbs and shows how the new intellectual, religious, and legal climate of the early modern period tended to cast suspicion on women who employed "secret knowledge" to terminate or prevent pregnancy. Knowledge of the menstrual-regulating qualities of rue, pennyroyal, and other herbs was widespread through succeeding centuries among herbalists, apothecaries, doctors, and laywomen themselves, even as theologians and legal scholars began advancing the idea that the fetus was fully human from the moment of conception.

Drawing on previously unavailable material, Riddle reaches a startling conclusion: while it did not persist in a form that was available to most women, ancient knowledge about herbs was not lost in modern times but survived in coded form. Persecuted as "witchcraft" in centuries past and prosecuted as a crime in our own time, the control of fertility by "Eve's herbs" has been practiced by Western women since ancient times.

    Library Journal

Even in ancient times, people limited the size of their families. Since the major responsibilities of pregnancy, birth, and child rearing fell on women, they found methods for controlling fertility and aborting unwanted children, and they have passed down this knowledge as an oral tradition that survives worldwide. Using early manuscripts of medical and botanical texts and the proceedings of court cases, historian Riddle examines the use of plants as contraceptives, offering a fascinating view of the early knowledge of reproduction and attempts to regulate it. As formal medical training evolved and the Roman Catholic Church gained power, these preparations were forbidden, and women offering or using them were tried as witches. The information remained available in disguised form, and, in many parts of the world, Queen Anne's Lace, Pennyroyal, and other botanicals are still used to "regulate menses." More scholarly than Shirley Green's The Curious History of Contraception (LJ 8/72), this work is recommended for academic and large public libraries.Barbara M. Bibel, Oakland P.L., Cal.
