Reviewer:Scott Morrison, B.S., M.Ed.(Pennsylvania State Univ Coll of Health & Human Development)
Description:This is an update of an introductory text for high school or college students interested in athletic training with 25 comprehensive and easy to follow chapters. The first edition was published in 2001.
Purpose:The author's stated purpose is to &quto;provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to establish a career path in sports medicine, in roles such as athletic trainer, physical therapist, personal trainer or medical salesperson.&quto; The author is very effective at addressing these objectives, by discussing each of the various components of athletic training in the 25 chapters. Other books have focused on similar objectives, yet the author of this book acknowledges in greater detail crossover areas to personal training and sales.
Audience:The author intends this book for high school students interested in developing a foundation to pursue a career in athletic training as well as college students as a text for introductory coursework. However, it is more appropriate for high school students because it may be too basic in scope to address the needs of collegiate athletic training programs. The author has valuable experience meeting the needs of both student groups with his 20 years of experience in educating and mentoring athletic training students.
Features:The book follows a logical progression that allows the reader to become familiar with the field of athletic training by introducing more difficult topics as the student progresses through the chapters. Nine chapters cover injury prevention, assessment, and evaluation, five chapters relate to management in athletic training, five chapters cover strength and conditioning, three chapters detail emergency situations, and finally three chapters cover therapeutic exercise. At the end of each chapter are a summary and student enrichment activities to reinforce the key points of each chapter. Ample illustrations and color pictures help students who are visual learners. One omission that stood out was the lack of discussion on the inflammatory response to tissue injury. The book provides a rudimentary explanation of the various tissues found in the body, a perfect introduction to explain the basics of the process of inflammation.
Assessment:This is an excellent book for high school students interested in exploring athletic training as a career. Compared to other books such as Fundamentals of Athletic Training, 2nd edition, Cartwright and Pitney (Human Kinetics, 2005), this book covers the field in greater breadth and depth. The second edition was necessary to reflect changes and developments in education and to update the chapters to reflect the latest techniques.
