Healing Power of Hado or Self Help Way to Treat Colitis and Other IBS Conditions Second Edition

Healing Power of Hado

Author: Toyoko Matsuzaki

In The Healing Power of Hado, Toyoko Matsuzaki shares stories of her experiences as a hado master and demystifies this form of energy and healing for readers. She defines hado as it relates to one's everyday life, shares her own story of how she became a hado master, and explains how readers can access this unique source of power. By tapping into their hado power, beginners can sense the hado of other people, objects, and environments. At a more advanced level, practitioners of this art can change physical aspects of their lives (for example, turn aggression into gentleness and change the taste of water). Those who practice hado at the master level can heal physical ailments of their own and others (hands-on or remotely), discover their clairvoyant abilities, and even receive messages from departed loved ones. In a world filled with violence and conflict, hado is an especially important and welcome force. Hado lessons and guidelines for forming a support group for continued practice are included.

The Eye Book or The Chelation Way

The Eye Book: A Complete Guide to Eye Disorders and Health

Author: Gary H Cassel

When all is well with our eyes, most of us take them for granted. But when our vision is blurred or our eyes are itchy and watery, it's hard to concentrate on anything but our eyes. In The Eye Book, three eye care specialists present a comprehensive reference to help readers care for their eyes and protect their vision, with special attention to changes and diseases that occur in the adult years.

After detailing how the various parts of the eye work together so we can see, the authors review everything that can go wrong -- from myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism to the major disorders of cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. They also thoroughly describe each part of the eye and the problems that can develop, from the irritation of itchy eyelids and conjunctivitis to emergency situations such as a detached retina. They describe the signs and symptoms of all these problems and how to deal with them, including when to apply a warm compress -- and when to head to the emergency room. Medical and surgical treatment of both minor eye irritations and major diseases are explained in detail, so readers know where to turn and what to expect.

The authors also tell readers what happens during an eye examination and how to recognize an eye emergency. They explain all about eyeglasses, including the various kinds of bifocals, and describe the care and maintenance of contact lenses in a way that makes wearing them a viable option for anyone who wishes to do so. They detail the special concerns of people with systemic diseases such as diabetes and indicate how common medications -- from antibiotics and antidepressants to tamoxifen -- affect the eyes. The pros andcons of refractive surgery are discussed, as are the special problems of people with low vision.

An appendix lists medications used to treat eye conditions and the side effects of those medications. The book is fully illustrated with fifty-five line drawings and includes a symptoms index that will direct readers to sections of the book which describe the possible causes of the specific symptoms they are experiencing.

Library Journal

Fear of reduced vision and blindness regularly tops surveys of consumers' concerns about their health. Therefore, comprehensive, current information on this small but vital area of the human body is a high priority for libraries answering consumer health queries. The authors are associated with the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University, consistently rated one of the top ophthalmology departments in the United States. Their guide covers routine eye care and the more common eye diseases, providing up-to-date facts on refractive surgery, treatment for optical neuritis, and possible nutritional therapies for cataracts and macular degeneration. Information on systemic and general health conditions affecting the eye is provided, as is a good introduction to the problem of "low vision," vision that cannot be corrected by spectacles, contact lenses, or introcular lens implants. The coverage of the newest refractive surgical techniques, clinical trials, and medications makes this an important acquisition for libraries with similar titles; highly recommended for public, school, and hospital libraries.--Pamela C. Sieving, W.K. Kellogg Eye Ctr., Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor

Booknews

Coverage extends to health problems and medications that effect the eyes. The volume does not include bibliographical references. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

The Chelation Way: The Complete Book of Chelation Therapy

Author: Morton Walker

Chelation (pronounced key-lay-shun) therapy is a safe, effective non-surgical treatment that has successfully been used to prevent and treat hardening of the arteries for over forty years in the United States. New evidence indicates that it may also help to control and, in some cases, reverse the effects of arthritis, cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, glaucoma, metal toxicity, irregular heart beat, senility, and gangrene, as well as a host of other degenerative illnesses. As more studies show the many benefits of chelation therapy, the number of physicians utilizing it continues to grow. In this important new book, Dr. Morton Walker explains how chelation works, documents the evidence of its effects, and discusses its oral and intravenous use. Since intravenous treatment is not always necessary, Dr. Walker also tells the reader about over-the-counter oral chelating agents -- what they are, where to find them, and what dosage to take.

Library Journal

Walker's book provides a complete explanation of chelation therapy. The only use for this therapy which is generally accepted is to remove lead from the bloodstream in cases of lead toxicity, although new evidence suggests it may help to control and in some cases reverse the effects of arthritis, cancer, stroke, and more. Using lay language, Walker explains the various chelating agents and how they work, and presents case studies of patients who have been helped by the therapy. An appendix lists chelating physicians worldwide. This is an interesting treatment of the subject, much more comprehensive than any other book. Recommended for public libraries only where books on alternative medical therapies are popular.--Barbara Kormelink, Bay Medical Ctr . Lib., Bay City, Mich.

With the help of pediatrician Hill (Univ. of Colorado) and nutritionist Crockett (VP, senior technology office, health & nutrition, General Mills), General Mills has produced another "healthful" cookbook. Approximately one quarter is devoted to weight-loss suggestions, menus, information on obesity, and weight loss authority Hill's Step Diet Book. The 140 recipes cover a variety of foods-breakfasts, snacks, slow cooking, dinners in 30 minutes, lunches for kids, and even desserts. Nutrition information, preparation time, and a sidebar from the doctor or nutritionist accompany each recipe. Not surprisingly, General Mills products and other packaged foods are used as ingredients, with Bisquick appearing often. Novice cooks, including children, will enjoy the simple directions and full-page color photographs. However, without some cooking knowledge, excessive oven heat and oven time may produce a burnt Halibut Potato Succotash Dinner. It is also doubtful that a Chicken Salad with Blue Cheese will be a favorite for children's lunches. Yet with the popularity of the ageless Betty Crocker, this cookbook will be in demand in public libraries.-Christine Bulson, SUNY at Oneonta Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Drug Therapy and Mood Disorders or Baby Massage for Dummies

Drug Therapy and Mood Disorders

Author: Joan Esherick

Everyone experiences the "blues" now and then as well as times of joy and self-confidence. Most people even experience mood swings-times when they move quickly from feelings like joy to opposite feelings like sorrow. But what happens when normal moods become so extreme that a person can't think, feel, or act appropriately? What if a person is so "up" he does foolish, even dangerous, things? What if he's so "down" he can barely get out of bed?

The U.S. Surgeon General reports that, at any one time, between 10 and 15 percent of the adolescent population in the United States suffers from major depression. That's one in ten teens! According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 20 to 40 percent of those will develop bipolar disorder (manic depression) within five years.

Often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, mood disorders present major challenges, such as increased risk for illness, higher probability of social and interpersonal problems, and greater likelihood of substance abuse for those who suffer with them. Mood disorders, when left untreated, can even be fatal: seven percent of adolescents with major depressive disorder commit suicide.

What are mood disorders, and how can they be treated? Using numerous case studies and sidebars, and written in language that is easy to understand, Drug Therapy and Mood Disorders takes a comprehensive look at the causes and symptoms of mood disorders. In its pages, you will learn about the methods for diagnosis and treatment, specific drugs used to treat mood disorders, and alternative treatment strategies. Along the way, you will discover that mood disorders, though serious and challenging, are treatable, and help can be found.

Cathi I. White - Children's Literature

Everyone experiences certain "ups" and "downs" in life, but what if those times become more frequent until one can hardly function or act appropriately? What if the changes from joy to sorrow happen more often and to the extreme so that those moods affect how one acts toward others? It could be possible that a person in these situations may be suffering from a mood disorder. A mood disorder is a "condition rooted in the brain that causes disturbances in a way that a person thinks, feels, or acts, but especially affects the person's moods." This detailed, well-written and very comprehensive book explores the aspects of mood disorders in adolescents. The reader will learn about the history of mood disorders, how they are treated, the drugs available and how they can help, and also the possible risks and side effects from taking these drugs. Real case studies are given as examples to let the reader know that they are not the only one who may be going through what they are experiencing. Adolescents will know that there is help they can get from various sources such as those listed in the back of the book. This enlightening book is also jam packed with photographs, charts, and glossaries. This educational book, part of the "Psychiatric Disorders: Drugs and Psychology for the Mind and Body" series helps the reader to be well informed, in simple language, about mood disorders. 2004, Mason Crest Publishers, Ages 12 up.

Sexual Violence on Campus or The Writing Diet

Sexual Violence on Campus: Policies, Programs and Perspectives, Vol. 4

Author: Allen J Ottens

This is a somber reminder that sexual aggression, violence, and rape are chronic and serious problems on college campuses today. The volume proposes proactive strides toward stopping such violence. It addresses the role of alcohol and rape, includes the latest information on club drugs and drug-facilitated rape, and explores the special issues surrounding gay, lesbian and transgender violence. Chapters also address changing "the culture" found in, and often fostered by, fraternities and sororities as well as some athletic teams. It puts forward constructive strategies for preventing sexual assault, managing anger, group counseling for survivors, and more. This book will aid counselors and administrators in understanding and stopping sexual assault on college campuses across the country.

Booknews

Date rape and sexual violence are finally being taken seriously on US college campuses, as attested to by these dozen papers. Ottens begins with an overview of the scope of the problem while pointing out that only some students exploit opportunities for such relationship transgressions. Most of the contributors focus on education, counseling, and risk reduction programs for "changing a culture." Others address the use of drugs to facilitate rape, and the sexual assault of gay/lesbian/bisexual students. Ottens and Hotelling are clinical psychologists at Northern Illinois U. Annotation c. The Writing Diet: Write Yourself Right-Size

Author: Julia Cameron

From the bestselling author of The Artist's Way, a revolutionary diet plan: Use art to take off the pounds!

Over the course of the past twenty-five years, Julia Cameron has taught thousands of artists and aspiring artists how to unblock wellsprings of creativity. And time and again she has noticed an interesting thing: Often, in uncovering their creative selves her students also undergo a surprising physical transformation-invigorated by their work, they slim down. In The Writing Diet, Cameron illuminates the relationship between creativity and eating to reveal a crucial equation: creativity can block overeating.

This inspiring weight-loss program, which can be used in conjunction with Cameron's groundbreaking book on the creative process, The Artist's Way, directs readers to count words instead of calories, to substitute their writing's "food for thought" for actual food. Using journaling to examine their relationship with food-and to ward off unhealthy overeating -readers will learn to treat food cravings as invitations to evaluate what they are truly craving in their emotional lives.

The Writing Diet presents a brilliant plan for using one of the soul's deepest and most abiding appetites-the desire to be creative-to lose weight and keep it off forever.

I'm a creativity expert, not a diet expert. So why am I writing a book about weight loss? Because I have accidentally stumbled upon a weight-loss secret that works. For twenty-five years I've taught creative unblocking, a twelve-week process based on my book The Artist's Way. From the front of the classroom I've seen lives transformed-and, to my astonishment, bodies transformed aswell. It took me a while to recognize what was going on, but sure enough, students who began the course on the plump side ended up visibly leaner and more fit. What's going on here? I asked myself. Was it my imagination, or was there truly a "before" and an "after"? There was!

The Person with Alzheimers Disease or New Cancer Survivors

The Person with Alzheimer's Disease

Author: Phyllis Braudy Harris

Few families are untouched by Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. Moving accounts of what it is like to care for someone with this disease have already been published, as well as how-to books that offer caregivers advice and information on coping. But this book is the first to provide a comprehensive report of what it is like to have dementia oneself-the subjective experience of living with progressive memory loss.

Each chapter discusses a different aspect of having dementia, from the initial assessment and diagnosis through placement in a nursing home. The discussions are grounded in qualitative research and case studies, which convey the variable and personal nature of the experience. They seek to help clinicians, researchers, students, and caregivers (both professionals and family members) understand the experience of dementia, and thereby to promote better caregiving through a person-centered approach.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Marquis D. Foreman, PhD, RN, FAAN (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing)
Description: This book presents various perspectives on the personal experience of living with progressive memory loss:specifically that due to Alzheimer's disease.
Purpose: The purposes are to describe what it is like to live day-to-day with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, and to identify what lessons can be learned from these accounts to improve the quality of care for these individuals and their families.
Audience: The editor indicates that the audience includes scholars and practitioners truly committed to person-centered dementia care and research.
Features: This book consists of 14 chapters in three parts: The Medical Experience; The Impact of the Diagnosis on Everyday Life; and Experiences with Formal Services. These chapters are written by both the providers of care as well as by people at various stages of Alzheimer's disease.
Assessment: This is an amazing book! The personal accounts of those either living with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or intimately providing care to such individuals are overwhelming. I was greatly moved by the very personal and intimate accounts of the difficulties and challenges presented by progressive memory loss. More important is the effort to take these experiences and learn from them. This book is critical for people newly diagnosed and their family and friends, and all of us who provide care to these families.

Booknews

In order to provide insight into the daily lives of Alzheimer's patients, Harris (aging studies and sociology, John Carroll U.) presents an overview of the subjective experience of living with progressive memory loss. Relying primarily on interviews and surveys with patients, 14 chapters look at Alzheimer's patients' experience with medical institutions, daily living, and formal services. The focus throughout is on the maintenance of selfhood and quality of life. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

What People Are Saying

Nancy L. Mace
This book is essential reading for everyone providing care. It moves beyond negative stereotypes to explore the richness and complexity of personhood with dementia. (Nancy L. Mace, co-author of The 36-Hour Day)

Murna Downs
Drawing on contributions from researchers and clinicians who have gathered information from a wide variety of sources, this book presents the day-to-day experience of living with dementia in the words of the people themselves. The book's originality lies in the evidence it brings to bear on the active and able manner in which people with dementia live with the condition. There are no comparable books published in this area. This will be a key text in dementia studies. (Murna Downs, University of Bradford)

New Cancer Survivors: Living with Grace, Fighting with Spirit

Author: Natalie Davis Spingarn

Surviving with cancer, Natalie Davis Spingarn tells us, means seeing yourself differently and recognizing that others may see you differently. It means worrying more about work and money. It means facing your mortality. It means dealing with the medical system by learning how to be a good consumer of health services -- including making choices among different doctors, medical centers, and insurance plans.

Diagnosed with cancer in the early 1970s and now an independent writer specializing in health and social policy issues (particularly for the Washington Post), Spingarn uses her experiences as the basis for describing and critiquing what experts say about the emotional, physical, family, and practical issues involved. She helps others deal with such issues by relating her own experiences, good and bad, and offering practical encouragement to readers in similar situations.

Lively and empathetic, The New Cancer Survivors will appeal to persons with cancer who, thanks to modern medical science, are "hanging in there with illnesses that once evoked only submission or surrender" -- as well as to their families, friends, and caregivers. Throughout, the author shines a bright light on the cancer experience, providing good reason to be hopeful as well as insight into how to respond when things do not go so well. Because she has suffered recurrences, she can compare treatment in the seventies (week-long hospital stays, for example, and extensive surgery and chemotherapy) with treatment in the nineties ("drive-through" precision surgery, genetic testing, the incorporation of some "complementary" therapies into mainstream medicine) and weigh the differences. The New CancerSurvivors digs deep for the truth and serves it up with humor and attitude -- offering a wealth of information, comfort, and inspiration.

Praise for Natalie Davis Spingarn:

"Spingarn... gives encouragement to others in similar situations, drawing on and citing the wealth of literature dealing with various aspects of cancer to supplement her own observations." -- Library Journal

"Deals with many topics traditionally considered taboo in talking to those with life-threatening illness, including problems with money, work, friends, relatives, and erratic health insurance coverage." -- Boston Globe

"The most important ingredient of the Spingarn recipe for 'hanging in': A generous dash of hope seasoned with the self-discipline of making choices and a willingness to take risks." -- New York Daily News

"A Baedeker for cancer patients and their families." -- Washington Post

"Natalie Davis Spingarn's great talent is finding the most common denominator that is not the lowest common denominator. She offers herself to her fellow cancer survivors as a favorite aunt who will 'talk about it' when no one else will. Every cancer survivor, no matter how well informed already, will find information and affirmation in this book. Medical professionals who want to learn what their work looks like from the patient's perspective will find a mirror view in which they can improve their practices." -- Arthur W. Frank, University of Calgary, author of At the Will of Body: Reflections on Illness and The Wounded Storyteller: Body, Illness, and Ethics

Lisa A. Desjardins

This is the compilation of the experiences of the author and other survivors who have experienced the many life issues of living with cancer. Through a collection of personal experiences of cancer survivors, the author purports to address realistically the paramount issues for those who are living with a serious illness and those who are taking care of people with a serious illness. She discusses issues that the cancer survivor and their caregivers experience on a daily basis and how they have overcome their obstacles. She also offers insight to what the future may hold, and to help ease stress for those who are already going through their experience. The goal is worthy. The author offers education and hope, and assists the reader in finding peace and acceptance in what could be a tumultuous experience. This book is geared towards cancer survivors and their caregivers, but would be welcomed by all. The medical community, politicians, or anyone who wants to understand the experience of a human being living with cancer would benefit greatly from this work. A variety of issues faced by the cancer survivor are discussed -- family, personal, spiritual, and medical. The book is easily delivered and appealing to the audience as these issues are discussed from the author's personal experience, seasoned with medical research. Concluding the book is the appendix, in which the Cancer Survivors Bill of Rights is discussed and a detailed reference list is provided. This is a work that has significant value for all involved with the cancer survivor. The author offers hope, encouragement, wisdom, and insight during a time when people with cancer and their families need it most. I would offerthis book to my own patients and their families as a source of comfort, as they go through their cancer journey.

Radiant Health: The Ancient Wisdom of the Chinese Tonic Herbs

    Author: Ron Teeguarden

Sure to appeal to the millions who embraced the tenets of Asian medicine in Deepak Chopra's "Ageless Body, Timeless Mind", this book offers road map to total health through the use Chinese tonic herbs.

    Library Journal

Teeguarden is a master herbalist and researcher of Chinese tonic herbs--"tonic" meaning herbs prescribed to promote "radiant" health as opposed to attacking disease. His publisher's legal department hedges its bets by stating in the review galley that "absolutely no medicinal claims are being made or implied in this book." Nevertheless, Teeguarden's text is replete with claims concerning sexual potency, the immune system, and anti-aging treatments, among others, that are entirely undocumented except by statements such as "Many studies now indicate...." To his credit (or the legal department's), Teeguarden provides information about contraindications and toxicity. Unfortunately, these caveats are equally undocumented. Radiant Health might be useful on a staff-only reference shelf, but only as a glossary to herbal terms. Not recommended.--Catherine Arnott Smith, Predoctoral Research Fellow, Ctr. for Biomedical Informatics, Univ. of Pittsburgh

The Betty Ford Center Book of Answers: Help for Those Struggling with Substance Abuse and for the People Who Love Them

    Author: James W West

ARE YOU OR IS SOMEONE YOU LOVE STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTION?

When it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, it's hard to know where to turn for help. The professionals at the Betty Ford Center--one of the world's leading and most trusted sources of treatment for oddiction--hove provided thousands with the strength, support, and expertise that substance abusers need to get well. Now, the former medical director of the Betty Ford Center shares that expertise in this remarkably honest and complete book, which answers vital questions that surround this difficult subject:

    • "My son seems to be following in his alcoholic father's footsteps. How can I help him?"

    • "My wife's the alcoholic, why do I need treatment?"

    • "Can the brain rerover from cocaine abuse?"

    • "Even a double dose of my prescription tranquilizers doesn't seem to help. Am I addicted?"

    • "If I get sober, what are my chances of staying sober?"

    • "l am uncomfortable with the spiritual aspect of AA. Is there on alternative?"

    • "Is it true that people who are forced into treatment get nothing out of it?"

Whether you are ten years sober, a current or potential substance abuser, or you care about someone who is, this volume will help you better understand--and fight--the destructive powers of addiction.

    Library Journal

A physician with the Betty Ford Center since it opened in 1982, West based this volume on his newspaper column, adopting a user-friendly, question-and-answer format that makes this basic overview of addictions appealing as well as informative. He explains that his responses "are direct, perhaps at times even abrupt, because that's the way surgeons talk to patients who have some grave disorder, lest there be doubt what should be done." Chapters include straightforward information on how to identify an alcoholic, intervention, effects of substance abuse on the brain and other parts of the body, treatment, prevention, and relapse. An especially useful chapter covers cross addictions and dual disorders. There is also a list of selected treatment organizations. Chapter headings point to the topics covered, but an index would have improved access. Browsing is easy in this practical little book, which may attract more readers because of its conversational style. Recommended for high school and public libraries.-Catherine T. The Miracle Method or Everything Nutrition

The Miracle Method: A Radically New Approach to Problem Drinking

    Author: Scott D Miller

From that "first thing," the authors help readers to imagine a future where drinking is not a problem and to specify small, concrete, obtainable goals that will make that future a reality. Neither the humiliation of "hitting bottom" nor a lifetime commitment to AA is necessary to make this approach work. Instead the individual learns to recognize exceptions (times when drinking is not a problem), catch himself "doing things right," handle setbacks, and revise the "miracle picture" when things aren't working. Highly practical, The Miracle Method is a radically new and effective approach to problem drinking.

    Library Journal

Miller, who practices solution-oriented therapy in Milwaukee and Chicago, and Berg, director of the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee, offer a new way to lick liquor.

Unstrange Minds or Chicken Soup and Other Folk Remedies

Unstrange Minds: Remapping the World of Autism

    Author: Roy Richard Grinker

This global exploration of autism by a scientist--and father of an autistic child--is the first book to show that the "epidemic" holds surprising new promise for better diagnosis and treatment. Unstrange Minds documents Grinker's quest to find out why autism is so much more common today, and to uncover the implications of the increase. His search took him to Africa, India, and East Asia, to the National Institutes of Mental Health, and to the mountains of Appalachia. What he discovered is both surprising and controversial: There is no true increase in autism.

Grinker shows that the identification and treatment of autism depends on culture just as much as on science. As more and more cases of autism are documented, doctors are describing the disorder better, school systems are coding it better--and children are benefiting.

    People Magazine

Rigorous and compelling. . . Deeper and more provocative than other such memoirs, his work beautifully conveys the fact that Isabel is not her disability; instead she is invested with `an inner truth . . . struggling to blossom.'

    Time Magazine

In Unstrange Minds: Remapping the World of Autism, Grinker uses the lens of anthropology to show how shifting cultural conditions change the way medical scientists do their work and how we perceive mental health

    Nature

A fresh view of the challenges posed by this condition.Grinker's exploration of cultural differences in attitudes to autism is very moving.

    Toronto Globe & Mail

His daughter Isabel was diagnosed in 1994, and his warmth and compassion for autistic children and parents alike shines through this immensely readable and informative narrative that looks closely at how culture influences the ways we understand, classify and treat autistic-spectrum disorders.

    New England Journal of Medicine

Thoughtfully written by a father and scientist trying to understand his daughter and illuminate her disorder.

    Slate

Unstrange Minds makes the case that the rise in autism diagnosis is nothing more than an epidemic of discovery.

    UPI

[A] beautifully written look at autism through the lens of history and culture.

    The Journal of Clinical Investigation

Grinker shows us that it's possible, and perhaps valuable, to deconstruct autism as a means of understanding and addressing it. Given the desperation so evident today, this is a welcome perspective.

    AHA Newsletter

    Scientifically rigorous and profoundly moving.

    PsycCritiques (American Psychological Assoc.)

Fascinating book at many levels. It is very well written and enjoyable to read.

    USA Today

Hands down, Unstrange Minds is the most useful book of the bunch for anyone who is interested in learning more about autism.

    Medscape Pediatrics

    [I]mpassioned and thoughtful.

    Publishers Weekly

Autism is no longer considered a rare, stigmatized disorder; it's one that touches the lives of an increasing number of individuals worldwide. Grinker, director of the George Washington University Institute for Ethnographic Research, is one example of this phenomenon. Driven by the 1994 autism diagnosis his daughter, Isabel, received, Grinker endeavors to collect the myriad scientific, historical and cultural components of autism into an accessible primer. The book is divided into two parts-academic and anecdotal-throughout which the author illustrates his daughter's development and how his family has coped and developed alongside her. The first section recounts the history of autism, from the illness's initial description in 1943, its once taboo status and the erroneously cited causes of autism. Special attention is given to the evolving diagnostic criteria and the increase in prevalence rates. In the emotionally powerful second portion, Grinker details the experiences of parents of autistic children in South Africa, South Korea and India, how their respective societies view the disorder (often negatively) and the obstacles surmounted to increase awareness of autism, its treatment and management. While this grounds the book, the lengths to which Grinker goes to prove to the parents of autistic children they are not alone needn't have been so extensive. (Feb.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    Corey Seeman - Library Journal

Anthropologist Grinker (George Washington Univ. Inst. for Ethnographic Research; In the Arms of Africa) beautifully explores autism from three distinct vantage points. First, he probes its impact on the family through his daughter Isabel (b. 1991). While there are relatively standard passages documenting conflicts with school placement and services, he taps a different side of autism by showing her learning the cello. Next, Grinker examines the broader historical context of autism through the work and lives of key figures Leo Kanner (who first identified autistic children) and Bruno Bettleheim (who worked extensively with them). He also addresses the autism epidemic by pointing out that many people with autism were not seen as autistic before. Third, the text addresses autism in a larger global context, explaining how cultures in Africa, India, and South Korea cope with the condition. These three elements combine to create a book that ranks with Uta Frith's Autism: Explaining the Enigmaas one of the great general books on autism. Highly recommended.

Eve's Herbs: A History of Contraception and Abortion in the West

    Author: John M Riddl

In Contraception and Abortion from the Ancient World to the Renaissance, John Riddle showed, through extraordinary scholarly sleuthing, that women from ancient Egyptian times to the fifteenth century had relied on an extensive pharmacopoeia of herbal abortifacients and contraceptives to regulate fertility. In Eve's Herbs, Riddle explores a new question: If women once had access to effective means of birth control, why was this knowledge lost to them in modern times?

Beginning with the testimony of a young woman brought before the Inquisition in France in 1320, Riddle asks what women knew about regulating fertility with herbs and shows how the new intellectual, religious, and legal climate of the early modern period tended to cast suspicion on women who employed "secret knowledge" to terminate or prevent pregnancy. Knowledge of the menstrual-regulating qualities of rue, pennyroyal, and other herbs was widespread through succeeding centuries among herbalists, apothecaries, doctors, and laywomen themselves, even as theologians and legal scholars began advancing the idea that the fetus was fully human from the moment of conception.

Drawing on previously unavailable material, Riddle reaches a startling conclusion: while it did not persist in a form that was available to most women, ancient knowledge about herbs was not lost in modern times but survived in coded form. Persecuted as "witchcraft" in centuries past and prosecuted as a crime in our own time, the control of fertility by "Eve's herbs" has been practiced by Western women since ancient times.

    Library Journal

Even in ancient times, people limited the size of their families. Since the major responsibilities of pregnancy, birth, and child rearing fell on women, they found methods for controlling fertility and aborting unwanted children, and they have passed down this knowledge as an oral tradition that survives worldwide. Using early manuscripts of medical and botanical texts and the proceedings of court cases, historian Riddle examines the use of plants as contraceptives, offering a fascinating view of the early knowledge of reproduction and attempts to regulate it. As formal medical training evolved and the Roman Catholic Church gained power, these preparations were forbidden, and women offering or using them were tried as witches. The information remained available in disguised form, and, in many parts of the world, Queen Anne's Lace, Pennyroyal, and other botanicals are still used to "regulate menses." More scholarly than Shirley Green's The Curious History of Contraception (LJ 8/72), this work is recommended for academic and large public libraries.Barbara M. Bibel, Oakland P.L., Cal.

An Evidence Based Approach to Dietary Phytochemicals or Dr Jensens Nutrition Handbook

An Evidence-Based Approach to Dietary Phytochemicals

    Author: Jane Higdon

This book provides a critical analysis of the current scientific, epidemiological, and clinical research on the health benefits of plant-based foods and dietary phytochemicals. Designed to aid the health professional in the clinical setting, the book provides highly practical information for understanding the sources of dietary and supplementary phytochemicals, as well as their nutrient interactions, drug interactions, and possible adverse effects.

    Features:
An overview of the health benefits of plant foods and beverages, including fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, whole grains, coffee, and tea
Current clinical and scientific evidence of the health benefits of individual dietary phytochemicals and classes of phytochemicals, including carotenoids, flavonoids, fiber, and more
Concise bullet-point summaries at the end of each chapter for rapid review of important concepts
Peer-reviewed by experts in the field to ensure material is both accurate and up-to-date

Evidence-based information with extensive lists of references in each chapter

    Doody Review Services

    Reviewer:Sara A. Arscott, M.S. Nutritional Sciences(University of Wisconsin-Madison)
Description:This is an overview of the current scientific and clinical evidence of the health benefits of plant foods and beverages and their individual dietary phytochemicals. The book provides an organized synthesis of current experimental, clinical, and epidemiological studies on the role of dietary phytochemicals in health and disease.
Purpose:With an emphasis on human research published in peer-reviewed journals and the inclusion of relevant cell culture, animal model, and epidemiological studies, this book succeeds in simplifying the overwhelming challenge of understanding the ways in which plant foods and dietary phytochemicals act to support health, while also carefully acknowledging the limits of the evidence.
Audience:Written for an audience of health professionals in the clinical setting, this book provides a readable and concise analysis for nutritionists, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals that will help them to educate patients about food choices. Additionally, this book will serve as an authoritative review for students in the health fields. In compiling this book, Dr. Jane Higdon, of the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, reviewed thousands of studies and assured the accuracy of the chapters by having them critically reviewed by authorities in each field.
Features:Two main sections make up the book, the first focusing on foods and beverages and the second on specific phytochemical constituents of plant foods such as carotenoids, fiber, essential fatty acids, polyphenols (includingflavonoids, soy isoflavones, and lignans), phytosterols, and others. The chapter structure is standardized, providing a readable and organized reference and includes an introduction and, where appropriate, metabolism and biological activities of compounds, a review of evidence that the food or compound plays a role in prevention or treatment of disease, food or supplement sources, intake recommendations, and safety. Healthcare professionals will find the appendixes useful, which include quick reference sections to diseases, basic nutrient and drug interactions, and phytochemical-rich foods.
Assessment:The strengths of this book lie in its readability, its thorough review of the current evidence base, and its emphasis on foods rather than supplements. The chapters are carefully written to acknowledge the limitations of the current evidence on the role individual phytochemicals play in health and disease. This book provides excellent practical information about the sources of dietary phytochemicals and will aid healthcare professionals in educating patients on dietary choices.

Bad Boys, Bad Men: Confronting Antisocial Personality Disorder

    Author: Donald W Black

Whether called black sheep, sociopaths, felons, con men, or misfits, some men break all the rules. They shirk everyday responsibilities, abuse drugs and alcohol, take up criminal careers, and lash out at family members. In the worst cases, they commit rape, murder, and other acts of extreme violence as though they lack a conscience. What makes these men--men we all know, whether as faces in the news or as people close to us--behave the way they do?

Bad Boys, Bad Men examines antisocial personality disorder or ASP, the mysterious mental condition that underlies this lifelong penchant for bad behavior. Psychiatrist and researcher Donald W. Black, MD, draws on case studies, scientific data, and current events to explore antisocial behavior and to chart the history, nature, and treatment of a misunderstood disorder that affects up to seven million Americans. Citing new evidence from genetics and neuroscience, Black argues that this condition is tied to biological causes and that some people are simply born bad. Bad Boys, Bad Men introduces us to people like Ernie, the quintessential juvenile delinquent who had an incestuous relationship with his mother and descended into crime and alcoholism; and John Wayne Gacy, the notorious serial killer whose lifelong pattern of misbehavior escalated to the rape and murder of more than 30 young men and boys. These compelling cases read like medical detective stories as Black tries to separate the lies these men tell from the facts of their lives.
Bad Boys, Bad Men not only describes the warning signs that predict which troubled children are more likely to become dangerous adults, but also details progress toward treatment forASP. This volume will be an essential resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, criminologists, victims of crime, families of individuals afflicted with ASP, and anyone else interested in understanding antisocial behavior.

    Library Journal

Black (psychiatry, Univ. of Iowa Coll. of Medicine) claims that ample new evidence from genetics and neuroscience supports a biological cause for antisocial personality disorder (ASP), lending truth to the adage "some people are simply born bad." ASP is intimately connected to many of society's ills, including crime, domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and even rape and murder. For men with severe ASP, life becomes an opportunity to break all social and moral rules without remorse. But there are ways of detecting warning signs in troubled children, and there are procedures--various combinations of medication, psychotherapy, and social institutional interventions--to prevent and treat ASP. Black emphasizes the fundamental need for a healthy moral conscience by analyzing a wide variety of case studies. An excellent companion title is Adrian Raine's The Psychology of Crime: Criminal Behavior as a Clinical Disorder (Academic, 1993). An eye opener suitable for all libraries.--Chogollah Maroufi, California State Univ., Los Angeles

Tai Chi or Cosmetic Surgery for Dummies

Tai Chi: Health for Life: How and Why It Works for Health, Stress Relief and Longevity

    Author: Bruce Frantzis

According to Time Magazine, tai chi is “the perfect exercise.”

Tai chi’s incredible powers are reflected in its popularity. Over 200 million practitioners worldwide—young, old, athletic, sedentary, chronically ill, overweight—are using tai chi’s slow, graceful movements as a potent preventative health care practice to regain control of their health, boost high performance, manage stress and reverse the effects of aging.

Tai Chi Health for Life is in effect a comprehensive consumers’ guide to tai chi, by international authority and teacher of Taoist health, martial arts and spiritual practices, Bruce Frantzis. Citing clinical studies and the practical experience of practitioners, this inspiring book persuasively argues why everyone should consider taking up tai chi.

Tai Chi: Health for Life is not a how-to exercise manual nor does it teach any particular style of tai chi. Instead the book tells people exactly how tai chi works, revealing why tai chi is so effective at relieving such chronic health problems as high blood pressure, asthma, chronic pain, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and anxiety. It explains how to choose a tai chi style and what to look for in a teacher. The book links the underlying energetic principles of tai chi to traditional Chinese medicine, such as acupuncture, and shows how its philosophy is derived from such ancient Taoist texts as the Tao Te Ching and the I Ching.

In Tai Chi Health for Life you will discover:
—Why doctors, nurses and alternative health care professionals are recommending the low impact movements of tai chi totheir patients
—Why senior practitioners call tai chi the ‘elixir of life’
—How tai chi improves workplace productivity and boosts mental stamina
—Tools to combat repetitive stress injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome
—How tai chi enhances sexual, athletic and intellectual performance
—Why tai chi, as ‘moving meditation’ can create inner peace
—The difference between tai chi, chi gung (qigong) and yoga
—How tai chi teachers and advanced practitioners can upgrade their skills.

Tai Chi: Health for Life peels away the mysteries surrounding the concept of chi–life-force energy—which is fundamental to both tai chi and chi gung. These chi-building practices supercharge other exercise methods, such as sports, weight-lifting and yoga. Developing chi inside the body, mind and spirit is the most important determinant for achieving health, relaxation and vitality.

“Bruce Frantzis is a true master.” —Michael E. Gerber, author of The E-Myth Revisited

    Library Journal

A well-known and popular tai chi teacher and practitioner, Frantzis (Opening the Energy Gates of Your Body) presents a thorough foundation for anyone thinking about starting tai chi or students of the practice who have not been introduced to the discipline's philosophy and benefits. In other words, readers will not find a demonstration of the movements. The author opens by defining tai chi and placing it in the larger context of Chinese thinking and traditional Chinese medicine before moving to a discussion of the health benefits, most of which derive from the control of stress and movement as well as meditation. Frantzis closes with some nuts-and-bolts issues of what students can expect to learn from tai chi and how to choose a teacher. The appendixes contain great information on how tai chi differs from yoga and Chi gung and the Five Elements. Highly recommended for public, hospital, and consumer libraries.-Howard Fuller, Stanford Health Lib., Palo Alto, CA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Get Up: A 12-Step Guide to Recovery for Misfits, Freaks, and Weirdos

    Author: Bucky Sinister

A tough love approach to recovery for those who would be mortified to be seen reading a recovery book—the author shares his stories & the steps that come from the self-identified losers who just might save your life.

    Publishers Weekly

This self-help book for the substance-abusing artistically-and atheistically-inclined is both a ringing endorsement of AA and a brilliant piece of literary performance with poetic and savagely funny insights. Spoken word artist Sinister-a self-professed "misfit" and recovering alcoholic and addict-celebrates sobriety and provides a methodical analysis of the 12-Step program interpolated with biting commentary ("The difference between the Bible and a Magic Eightball is that 400 years ago, you would've been burned at the stake for owning a Magic Eightball") and encouragement that is, by turns, sincere (in particular a foray into why artists are so prone to addictions) and comic ("Finding Your Inner A-Team"). The book is a wild mixture of autobiography, philosophy, social criticism, pop culture and nuttiness: the consummate self-help book for those too cool for self-help books. Although the author occasionally veers uncomfortably close to glamorizing his addictions, his advice is sound, detailed and heartfelt. (Oct.)

    Dale Farris - Library Journal

A San Francisco-based spoken word artist, poet, and performer, Sinister developed a drinking problem as a teenager. When he decided to get sober, he took the traditional, faith-based 12-step group approach despite his fears about losing his creative muse and his issues with higher-power mythology (he's an atheist). The risk paid off, and for six years he's been clean. Here, he shares his journey through his addiction and recovery, detailing how he managed to integrate the 12-step philosophies into his own beliefs. He frankly reveals how he was initially afraid of embracing the techniques while motivating others to join him in their own efforts to get clean. The author's advice to addicts is soundly rooted in recovery practice, but he also debunks the oft-repeated excuses that prevent addicts from getting up from their malaise and getting involved in recovery. Sinister gives readers with similar beliefs a practical, meaningful alternative to the dogma of recovery. His iconoclastic approach to addiction recovery will make a valuable addition to the growing works in this field. Highly recommended for university libraries supporting the helping professions and larger public libraries.

Spiritual Nutrition: Six Foundations for Spiritual Life and the Awakening of Kundalini

    Author: Gabriel Cousens

When we eat, can we feed the soul as well as the body? Can a diet have an impact on spirituality? Spiritual Nutrition empowers readers to develop personal diets that are appropriate to their lifestyles and spiritual practices. Drawing on 14 years of clinical experience and research, Dr. Gabriel Cousens discusses nutritional issues that can help answer these questions, including raw vs. cooked food; high vs. low protein; the concepts of assimilation and fasting; alkaline--acid balance; attitudes about food; nutrients, energy, and structure building.

In addition, Cousens shares his new dietary system of "spiritual nutrition" that is based on the relationship that the color of the food has to corresponding colors of the human chakra system, hence, the "rainbow diet." For true nourishment, he strongly promotes the connection of diet to meditation, fellowship, wisdom, and love.

Postpartum Depression Demystified: An Essential Guide for Understanding and Overcoming the Most Common Complication after Childbirth

    Author: Joyce A Venis

Postpartum depression is the most common complication women experience after childbirth — nearly 700,000 new moms suffer from it each year. Yet this serious mood disorder, characterized by sadness, anxiety, feelings of hopelessness and guilt, insomnia, and thoughts of harming the baby or oneself, continues to be widely misunderstood and frequently misdiagnosed. In Postpartum Depression Demystified, renowned PPD authority Joyce Venis and Suzanne McCloskey, both PPD sufferers themselves, turn their combined experience and expertise into an insightful and supportive guide for everyone living with and seeking to understand this condition. Venis and McCloskey cover topics including: the nature of PPD and how it differs from other perinatal mood disorders how to recognize and cope with the symptoms how to obtain an accurate diagnosis key risk factors and how to minimize them medications and therapies getting the support you need from your partner, family, and friends how PPD can affect your relationship with your partner and your baby nurturing yourself through recovery

    Jodith Janes - Library Journal

For too long, postpartum depression has been misunderstood, and those who suffer from it have been stigmatized, say Venis, a psychiatric registered nurse and past president of Depression After Delivery (which recently merged with Postpartum Support International), and McCloskey, former editor at Marlowe & Company. Motherhood is commonly depicted as a happy event, but many women are not prepared to deal with the emotional, physical, and psychological stress. The authors aim to help with their own stories of experiencing postpartum depression before going on to explain what the condition is, list its symptoms, discuss relevant diagnostic tests, direct readers to healthcare professionals, and address self-care, among other topics. Personal histories, questionnaires, and easy-to-follow advice and tips make this a great resource. Bold-faced terms in the text are defined in a glossary. A list of organizations, suggested readings, and web sites complete this solid complement to Shoshana Bennett and Pec Indman's Beyond the Blues: A Guide to Understanding and Treating Prenatal and Postpartum Depression. Recommended for consumer health collections.

Raw Ingredient Quality in Processed Foods: The Influence of Agricultural Principles and Practices

    Author: Mark B Springett

The properties of incoming raw ingredients have a great impact on the processing, storage, and resulting quality of all food products, yet the effects of agronomic practices on product quality and safety are often not well understood, as illustrated by the BSE outbreak in cattle and other public health crises. This book is the first to relate different agronomic practices to differenct product types, and to relate all to the final safety and quality of foods and drinks. In particular, factors such as variety or species, fertilizer or feed regimes, effect of water, climate, and microbiological loading can all have large effects on the processing properties and final flavor, texture and color of foods. Written by experts in their fields, this highly practical book provides essential information for food scientists and technologists as well as other professionals in food processing and food ingredients.

Always Separate, Always Connected Independence and Interdependence in Cultural Contexts of Development

    Author: Catherine Raeff

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of theoretical and empirical scholarship on how issues of human separateness, or independence, and issues of human connectedness, or interdependence, are played out in diverse cultural contexts. Despite agreement on the value of understanding culture and development in terms of independence and interdependence, many issues remain open for continued theoretical refinement and empirical analysis.

This book presents a fresh conceptualization which holds that independence and interdependence are multifaceted and inseparable dimensions of human functioning that may be defined and enacted differently in different cultures. Thus, the current approach accounts for the fundamental separateness and connectedness of all human beings in a way that is both universally applicable and culturally sensitive. Based on this conceptual approach, the focus of this text is to delineate how varied independence and interdependence issues are interrelated during development in culturally distinct ways. In doing so, the book offers a conceptual approach that moves cultural and developmental analyses beyond investigating whether some cultures value independence or interdependence more or less than others, to investigating how both independence and interdependence are construed and particularized during development around the world.

Always Separate, Always Connected: Independence and Interdependence in Cultural Contexts of Development will be of interest to a wide range of developmentalists in psychology, education, family studies, anthropology, and sociology. In addition, the book could serve advanced undergraduates, as well as graduate students in thesevaried disciplines. It may also be of interest to social welfare practitioners, such as clinical psychologists, guidance counselors, and social workers.

Antidepressants, Antipsychotics, and Stimulants: Dangerous Drugs on Trial

Author: Phd Dr David W Tanton

This book exposes a major marketing scheme currently under way, and unfortunately our children are the primary targets! It is the new federally mandated TeenScreen program, which is nothing more than a deceptive marketing scheme to place as many children as possible on one (ore more) highly profitable, although unbelievably dangerous drugs. Unfortunately, it has been working! This mandatory mental screening process was deliberately designed to assure that many "perfectly normal children" would now qualify for one or more of these "very profitable" drugs. And it's making its way across America through public schools!

It all began with the 374 "different newly created mental conditions" in order to justify placing our children, (including preschoolers), on one or more of the dangerous mind-altering drugs that, although legal, can still be lethal! Only one of the sixteen drugs being promoted for children's use was actually tested on, or approved by the FDA for children's use!

With approximately 575 potential side effects associated with ProzacT that were listed with the FDA, and over 20,000 law suits settled by the maker Eli Lilly, to date, the question is: Why is Eli Lilly still being allowed to promote ProzacT for even pregnant mothers, and very young children? Their tremendous influence with the FDA has to be obvious, and unfortunately places millions of children at extreme risk as a result. That will soon become obvious, once you learn the damning evidence I uncovered, regarding the many "serious risks" associated with ProzacT.

The same also applies to the stimulant drug RitalinT, as there are also newer versions of that same basic drug as well. And wenow have an additional class of drugs known as atypical antipsychotics, which are being aggressively promoted as well. It has become an extremely profitable business, and has absolutely nothing to do with mental health, but instead actually threatening our mental health.

You will discover that these drugs not only pose a "serious threat" to both you, and your children, but in some cases, the developing fetus as well! Possibly the very best news is, you basically don't need them, and there are "much better" drug-free solutions, proven more effective!

Not only is the mind-altering potential of these drugs a serious concern, but you will learn why (in only four years' time) twice as many children were placed on diabetes medication, and why so many children are now acquiring cancer. Not only that, but these drugs damage children's brains, lowering their I.Q.s, and increasing their risk for acquiring dementia and Alzheimer's disease at an early age as well. And you will find that I always provide adequate scientific proof to substantiate my claims.

Then as usual, I never identify a problem without, in turn, providing a solution. You will likely be quite amazed at how many different options are available for you to choose from, and how simple and inexpensive they can be. Absolutely no one needs these dangerous mind-altering drugs that contribute to major disease, while reducing mental capacity!

Chinese Dietary Therapy or Ultimate Dim Mak

    Chinese Dietary Therapy

    Author: Ji Lin Liu

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, specific foods have individual therapeutic properties. A particular food can be used not only to maintain health but also to contribute towards the treatment of a patient. Chinese Dietary Therapy provides a comprehensive guide to a wide range of foods. The book has been translated from a Chinese text and gives information about the way foods are prepared in the West; concepts in, and background to, the development of dietary therapy; general properties of foods and their application; principles and methods of dietary therapy; properties and applications of specific foods, including vegetables, fruit, cereals, nuts, meat, fish and shellfish; recipes and restrictions for common illnesses, and general, food and symptom indexes. Edited for Western practice, this book will find a wide readership amongst all practitioners and students of Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as being of interest to any health care professional involved with nutrition and diet.

    Chiayeng Wang

In Chinese culture, it is believed that all food falls within one of the ""five elements"" of the body's control cycle. According to Chinese tradition, to obtain the optimal benefit of nutrition, one must carefully select food sources (natural and preserved) that balance the interaction of these different elements. For the same reason, specific formulations of these different types of dietary material have been used to treat aliments that are thought to be caused by an imbalance of the five elements in the body. The book is divided into three major sections; the first section is devoted to ideology of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the second section describes the nature of different food groups, and the third section describes the practical approaches of dietary therapy according to ancient Chinese custom. The purpose is to raise the awareness of the importance of nutrition in normal and disease development, as developed by Chinese tradition. Few such books are available in English, and this book meets its objectives of introducing and discussing TCM dietary therapy. This book provides largely lay description of TCM that is expected to be useful for general public. It is likely to be informative to specialists who are interested in exploring the possibility of disease control by ways of natural means, i.e., without drugs, but no scientific basis is provided for these traditional methods. This book would fare better if more graphic materials were included in the section where the history and principle of TCM are derived. The book has cited 10 references in the introduction. While these references are appropriate, additional references should be included in the other sectionsof the book. There is a glossary of herbs at the end of the book, although little information can be extracted from this list. This book provides informative materials for two general groups. The first group includes those who are not aware of diet being one of the most powerful medicines for health maintenance. The book will help them take notice, if not comprehend, that the choice of food intake is largely responsible for the stamina of a person. The second group includes those who have a vested interest in learning or practicing traditional dietary therapy. The book provides a fascinating summary and description of ancient, traditional Chinese diet therapy. Although many aspects of the therapy have been practiced for centuries, no scientific basis for these practices is presented.

Cooking for Life or Diabetes mellitus

Cooking for Life: A Guide to Nutrition and Food Safety for the HIV-Positive Community

    Author: Robert H Lehmann

One single factor can have life-or-death importance for someone with HIV: food. The right diet and nutrition can boost the immune system, and most important, maintain lean body mass. This groundbreaking, compassionate, and medically sound sourcebook is a food bible for the HIV community and their caregivers. Cooking for Life contains all the information you need about one of the safest, most effective, yet underutilized, weapons for staying well.

    Publishers Weekly

Delivering soup-to-nuts nutritional education for those who have HIV or AIDS (and those who care for them), this no-nonsense guide offers substance rather than magic or promises of miracles. A comprehensive, comprehensible organization covers subjects ranging from food and water safety (food poisoning can be fatal to those who are immuno-suppressed) to how to gain weight and deal with nausea (ginger is a good bet). Lehman, a former executive chef of a food-delivery program for people with AIDS, consulted with physicians and nutritionists. In addition to the nutrition and food safety chapters, there is a section that explains cooking techniques and provides more than 35 easy-to-follow recipes to help combat wasting and loss of appetite. The book ends with several useful appendices in which one can find AIDS-specific meal programs, phone numbers for hotlines that provide help and referrals, a reprint of ACT UP's Standard of Care as a guideline for health management and a sample of a living will. Thought and care are evident throughout this volume, and it belongs, dog-eared and food-stained, in the kitchens and bookcases of people living with HIV or AIDS and those who care for them. (Jan.)

    Library Journal

This work is much more than just a cookbook, as the title might suggest. It is a comprehensive guide to nutrition and food safety for HIV-positive people and their caregivers. The author, a longtime chef who began the nutrition program at the Metropolitan AIDS Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance (MANNA) in Philadelphia, has called upon the expertise of a team of advisers including a physician, a nurse who specializes in nutrition, and a registered dietitian. The result is a very thorough, solid, and practical guide, firmly grounded in sound nutritional principles. Included are sections on basic nutrition, safe food-handling practices, ways to deal with specific nutritional concerns of those living with HIV/AIDS, and, yes, recipes. Written in a friendly and accessible yet authoritative style, the book contains information helpful to everyone. Both informed readers and those working with HIV/AIDS patients will find it useful. Highly recommended.-Linda Gleason, Univ. of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey Lib., Newark

Ultra-Longevity: The Seven-Step Program for a Younger, Healthier You

    Author: Mark Liponis

Now in paperback, UltraLongevity presents a revolutionary idea: that aging and aging-related diseases---including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes---are autoimmune problems, and that a well-managed immune system is the key to healthy aging. Starting with a quiz---"How Fast Are You Aging?"---Dr. Mark Liponis explains the new science, lays out an accessible and proven 7-step program with an 8-day meal plan, and motivates readers to put the program into practice so that they can keep their minds sharp, become more physically fit, be more resistant to infections and disease, and feel and stay younger than they ever imagined.

Liponis, a corporate medical doctor, theorizes that it isn't aging that kills a person: it's their immune system. According to the book, "Immune system hyperactivity" can be stopped at any age by incorporating healthy lifestyle changes. An interesting quiz ("How Fast Are You Aging?") points to major factors in an overactive immune system. Smoking, poor air quality, being overweight, overuse of antibiotics, low birth weight, loneliness and stress all have a negative impact on your score, while eating right, getting enough sleep and exercise, having a pet and a good sex life will put you in the plus column. Liponis renders the complicated immune system understandable by comparing it to our nation's Homeland Security-investigating intruders and warding off potential threats. His seven steps to a healthy system (breathe, eat, sleep, dance, love, soothe, enhance) are well reasoned and sensible. However, the eight-day meal plan may not be to everyone's liking, and Liponis occasionally lapses into a touchy-feely, new-age tone that may turn off some readers. (Sept.)

Susan B. Hagloch - Library Journal

In the latest book on aging well and reducing or minimizing degenerative disorders associated with aging, Liponis (medical director, Canyon Ranch Spa; coauthor, Ultraprevention) claims that an overactive immune system causes arthritis, diabetes, irritable-bowel disorders, asthma, and so on. C-reactive proteins (CRPs) indicate the level of immune system activity; Liponis cites studies that have shown how CRP levels can be lowered. As John Robbins did in Healthy at 100and Sanjay Gupta in Chasing Life, Liponis focuses on ways to reduce wear and tear through healthy eating, regular exercise, social interaction, deep breathing, etc. His lengthy introduction to the immune system may be slow-going for some readers, but the program itself is easy to follow and supported by good documentation. Included are excellent recipes from the famed Canyon Ranch kitchen. Libraries that are building collections in this subject will definitely want to add this; recommended. A Guide to Survivorship for Women with Ovarian Cancer or Encyclopedia of Body Adornment

A Guide to Survivorship for Women with Ovarian Cancer (Johns Hopkins Press Health Book Series)

    Author: F J Montz

This comprehensive guide to ovarian cancer offers a wealth of information to ease the physical, emotional, and psychic suffering of women with the disease. The authors -- two Johns Hopkins gynecologic oncologists and a gynecologic-oncology clinical nurse -- put particular emphasis on the concept of "survivorship," or living life well in the face of daunting uncertainties. They stress the importance of self-determination: the right of each patient to be informed, involved, and in control of her care.

Up-to-date information on diagnosis and treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, pain management, and alternative therapies, forms the core of the book. But the authors' immense clinical experience also means they understand what women worry about and care about, and they address these issues with true compassion. Stressing quality of life, self-determination, and living life to the fullest, this remarkable book speaks to women with ovarian cancer everywhere.

    Library Journal

It is estimated that in 2005 alone, 16,000 American women will die from ovarian cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths among this demographic. If diagnosed and treated early-before the cancer spreads outside the ovary-it is a highly treatable disease. However, only 29 percent of cases are discovered at this early stage. Johns Hopkins gynecologic oncologists Montz and Bristow and clinical nurse Anastasia provide a thorough, up-to-date resource for women with ovarian cancer, offering information on diagnosis and treatment, including chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy, pain management, and alternative/complementary options. The overarching theme is survivorship, which means not just avoiding death but living life to its fullest in the face of major challenges. At the core of the authors' philosophy is the need for ovarian cancer patients to be well informed and in control of their own care. This important book should be included in all consumer health collections, as well as purchased by women affected by the disease.-Linda M.G. Katz, Drexel Univ. Health Sciences Libs., Philadelphia Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Interesting textbook: Easy Party Cakes or The Encyclopedia of Sauces for Your Food

    Encyclopedia of Body Adornment

    Author: Margo DeMello

All cultures everywhere have attempted to change their body in an attempt to meet their cultural standards of beauty, as well as their religious and or social obligations. In addition, people modify and adorn their bodies as part of the complex process of creating and re-creating their personal and social identities. Body painting has probably been practiced since the Paleolithic as archaeological evidence indicates, and the earliest human evidence of tattooing goes back to the Neolithic with mummies found in Europe, Central Asia, the Andes and the Middle East. Adornments such as jewelry have been found in the earliest human graves and bodies unearthed from five thousand years ago show signs of intentional head shaping.

It is clear that adorning and modifying the body is a central human practice. Over 200 entries address the major adornments and modifications, their historical and cross-cultural locations, and the major cultural groups and places in which body modification has been central to social and cultural practices. This encyclopedia also includes background information on the some of the central figures involved in creating and popularizing tattooing, piercing, and other body modifications in the modern world. Finally, the book addresses some of the major theoretical issues surrounding the temporary and permanent modification of the body, the laws and customs regarding the marking of the body, and the social movements that have influenced or embraced body modification, and those which have been affected by it.

Entries include, acupuncture, amputation, Auschwitz, P.T. Barnum, the Bible, body dysmorphic disorder, body piercing, branding, breast augmentation and reduction, Betty Broadbent, castration, Christianity, cross dressers, Dances Sacred and Profane, Egypt, female genital mutilation, foot binding, freak shows, genetic engineering, The Great Omi, Greco-Roman world, henna, infibulation, legislation & regulation, lip plates, medical tattooing, Meso-America, military tattoos, National Tattoo Association, nose piercing, obesity, permanent makeup, primitivism, prison tattooing, punk, rites of passage, scalpelling, silicone injections, Stalking Cat, suspensions, tanning, tattoo reality shows, tattooing, Thailand, transgender, tribalism.

    VOYA

Body modification is a hot topic with social scientists and mainstream culture. While there are numerous report-style resources and "celebrity" tattoo books, none till this reference have covered the breadth and scope of the field as only a true encyclopedia can. An alphabetical list of entries and a subject guide to related topics enhance accessibility, providing users with direction in how to select appropriate entries. The depth of topics covered will enthrall the casual reader and provide researchers with a tremendous amount of information. From the legislature and regulation of tattooing, to lip plates and ear stretching, every imaginable body enhancement is covered, crossing many cultures as well. Entries are concise, informative, entertaining, and completely accessible to teens and adults. Important words are presented in bold for quick reference and are well defined for the reader. As a reference work this book will find a secure home in the library reference deptartment, but it will also never stay on the shelf in a library with multiple copies. The scope alone makes it a potential entry on countless book lists. The only flaws noted are the design and lack of photographs and its shallow title. This book covers much more than body adornment, as it treats both the positive and negative aspects of body modification, as well as cultural and historical issues. Smatterings of illustrations complement entries, but there are only eight pages in color, all of which are images of tattoos. Readers will want to see more. Reviewer: Jessica Mize

Good Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Practice: Rationale and Compliance

    Author: John Sharp

With over twenty different official regulatory statements worldwide on Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) for pharmaceutical, drug, or medicinal products, two stand out as being the most influential and most frequently referenced.

Bridging the gap between U.S. regulations and European Good Manufacturing Practice guidelines, Good Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Practice: Rationale and Compliance gleans the most important substance from the U.S. Current Good Manufacturing Practice, parts 210 and 211 (US cGMPs, 2002) and the European Guide to Good Manufacturing Practice for Medicinal Products for Human and Veterinary Use (EU GMP guide, 2002). The author uses his 40+ years of experience in technical management, production, quality assurance, and distribution within the pharmaceutical industry, offering a hands-on guide to better understand and implement optimal pharmaceutical practices.

This book also compares the principle requirements of GMP, and explores the reasoning behind these requirements and ways to comply with them. Relevant topics include personnel, documentation, premises and equipment, production, quality control, self-inspection, recalls, and more. This is an essential guidebook for those who wish to expand their pharmaceutical business in any international capacity.

    Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Thomas L. Pazdernik, PhD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This is how-to-do-it manual brings together important information from more than 20 different worldwide official regulatory documents on good pharmaceutical manufacturing practice.
Purpose: The purpose of this offering is to bring together in one source the most important information referred to as regulations, guides, or guidelines from over 20 documents. It draws most heavily from two very important resources available in the public domain: The United States Current Good Manufacturing Practice Regulations (cGMPs) and the European Commission's Good Manufacturing Practices for Medicinal Products for Human and Veterinary Use (the EC GMP Guide). The author does an excellent job in meeting this goal.
Audience: This book is a very important addition to the personal library of anyone who is involved in the regulatory process for pharmaceutical products.
Features: The first chapter compares and contrasts the principles and rationales of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), drawing most extensively from the U.S. cGMPs and EC GMP Guide. This is followed by several chapters dealing with personnel, facilities, contamination control, equipment, materials, production, packaging and labeling, holding and distribution, laboratory controls, records and reports, and how to deal with returned products issues. There is a chapter devoted to the basic principles of manufacturing sterile products followed by a chapter on GMP and quality assurance in their manufacturing. There are separate chapters dealing with validation of both the general principles as well as the applications of good manufacturing practice. The last chapter provides a concluding comparison of the U.S. cGMPs and the EC GMP Guide.
Assessment: I strongly recommend this book as a must resource for anyone involved in good pharmaceutical manufacturing practice of products for the international market.

Trauma and Addiction or Care and Feeding of Your Chi

Trauma and Addiction: Ending the Cycle of Pain Through Emotional Literacy

    Author: Tian Dayton

For the past decade, author Tian Dayton has been researching trauma and addiction, and how psychodrama (or sociometry group psychotherapy) can be used in their treatment. Since trauma responses are stored in the body, a method of therapy that engages the body through role play can be more effective in accessing the full complement of trauma-related memories.

This latest book identifies the interconnection of trauma and addictive behavior, and shows why they can become an unending cycle. Emotional and psychological pain so often lead to self-medicating, which leads to more pain, and inevitably more self-medicating, and so on--ad infinitum. This groundbreaking book offers readers effective ways to work through their traumas in order to heal their addictions and their predilection toward what clinicians call self-medicating (the abuse of substances [alcohol, drugs, food], activities [work, sex, gambling, etc. ] and/or possessions [money, material things]. ) Readers caught up in the endless cycle of trauma and addiction will permanently transform their lives by reading this book.

Therapists treating patients for whom no other avenue of therapy has proved effective will find that this book offers practical, lasting solutions. Case studies and examples of this behavioral phenomenon will illustrate the connection, helping readers understand its dynamics, recognize their own situations and realize that they are not alone in experiencing this syndrome. The author deftly combines the longstanding trauma theories of Van der Kolk, Herman, Bowlby, Krystal and others with her own experiential methods using psychodrama, sociometry and group therapy in the treatment ofaddiction and posttraumatic stress disorder. While designed to be useful to therapists, this book will also be accessible to trade readers. It includes comprehensive references, as well as a complete index.

    Library Journal

Addicts and their families are victims of posttraumatic stress disorder, argues Dayton, a therapist specializing in addiction treatment. As such, they are numbed, unable to identify their emotions and respond to them suitably so that they can cope with addiction and other problems. A number of techniques are discussed for developing this "emotional literacy," including letter-writing, journal-keeping, analyzing family photographs, and psychodrama. As with many therapy books, only anecdotal evidence is offered, so readers are unable to gauge the validity of Dayton's sweeping statements about large groups of people. On the other hand, a number of people clearly experience unhappy and insecure childhoods and must deal with the aftereffects. The advice offered here seems useful and sensible, but much of it can be applied only in a recovery group. In other words, this clearly isn't meant to be a self-help book, but it doesn't seem to be written for a professional audience either. This lack of focus makes the title of marginal interest.--Mary Ann Hughes, Neill P.L., Pullman, WA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

Based on the New York Times bestselling Rice Diet Solution.

After the success of The Rice Diet Solution, the Rice Diet Program's message boards were bombarded with pleas and suggestions for more Rice Dietfriendly recipes. The result is this collection of healthy whole-food dishes, which includes personal favorites from the Rice Diet kitchen as well as from successful dieters who want to share their weight-loss tips with everyone who intends to lose weight and live a healthier life.

    Includes such recipes as:
    Ґ Basil-Mint Quinoa Salad
Ґ Roasted Red Pepper Lettuce Wrap
    Ґ Zesty Sweet Potato Chips
    Ґ Pan-Seared Sea Scallops
    Ґ Chocolate-Banana Cream Custard
    Ґ Toasted Ginger Papaya

    And many more!

    Claire Schaper - Library Journal

This cookbook is filled to the brim with healthy recipes that adhere to the rice diet's relatively strict dietary rules established in 1939. After an outline of the program (each consecutive week allows more varied ingredients à la the South Beach diet and other diets), readers advance to the recipes, which are organized into categories and include sweet anecdotes about their evolution, as they were contributed by dieters, rice diet dietitians, and cooks. A first glance at many of the main dishes may leave the impression that the meals are bland and a bit complicated for their short ingredient list. Upon closer inspection, though, there are tasty alternatives to basic American meals, as well as more "exotic" foods. The rice diet aims to combat not only weight gain but also obesity, heart disease, and other preventable ailments. Weight loss may be only a pleasant side effect of following this practical, heart-healthy plan. Cancer Biology

    Author: Raymond W Ruddon

A thorough yet concise account of cancer biology, this book emphasizes the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the transformation of normal into malignant cells, the invasiveness of cancer cells into host tissues, and the metastatic spread of cancer cells in the host organism. It also defines the fundamental pathophysiological changes that occur in tumor tissue and in the host animal or patient. The approach throughout the book is to discuss the historical development of a field, citing the key experimental advances to the present day, and to evaluate the current evidence that best supports or rules out concepts of the molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating cancer cell behavior. For all the areas of fundamental cancer research, an effort has been made to relate basic research findings to the clinical disease states. The book is well illustrated with schematic diagrams and actual research data to demonstrate points made in the text, and there is an extensive, up-to-date bibliography.

The Third Edition includes completely new chapters on genetic alterations in cancer cells, tumor suppresser genes, transcriptional regulation, growth factors and signal transduction mechanisms, cell cycle regulation and apoptosis, gene-targeted therapy for cancer, and cancer prevention. All other chapters have been thoroughly updated.

From reviews of previous editions: "Highly recommended for readers who wish to spend several hours with a well-written, well-selected, effectively illustrated, and well-integrated overview of the sciences that join to make up the field of tumor biology." --New England Journal of Medicine

"I can think of no better introduction fora graduate student to contemporary cancer research, especially at the cellular level." --The Times Higher Education Supplement

Reviewer:Jill C. Pelling, PhD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description:This comprehensive book reviews the principles and mechanisms of carcinogenesis as well as the epidemiology of human cancer, cancer diagnosis, and cancer prevention. A wide spectrum of important topics are covered, including the characteristics of cancer, causes, epidemiology, cancer cell biochemistry and molecular genetics, tumor immunology, and cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. All nine chapters have been updated from the third edition published in 1995.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide students, as well as basic and translational cancer researchers and clinical researchers, with a common framework of the fundamental concepts and pathways of carcinogenesis as well as perspectives on future directions and issues in the field of cancer biology. As with the previous three editions, a significant strength of this book is the discussion of key historical discoveries and advances in cancer research over the past 230 years. A laudable goal of this fourth edition is to educate graduate students who are beginning their training on the important discoveries made by the early pioneers in the fields of experimental, clinical, and epidemiological cancer research.
Audience:The author has targeted this book at advanced students and researchers in the fields of cancer biology and translational cancer research.
Features:Excellent chapters cover the major topics in cancer biology and include extensive bibliography sections. The black-and-white diagrams are for the most part clear and well executed. New to this edition are aseries of color glossy figures that illustrate a number of signaling pathways as well as schematics that illustrate various methodologies such as dual-modality reporter gene imaging, MALDI-tof mass spectrometry, and microarray analysis by hierarchical clustering.
Assessment:Overall this is a well crafted book for graduate students and cancer researchers who wish to learn more about the key concepts and pathways involved in the rapidly advancing field of cancer biology.
